DESTINATION

Damaraland

Ancient geology, desert-adapted wildlife and cultural depth.

WHY GO

Damaraland: what to know before you go.

Damaraland is a rugged, sparsely populated region of rust-red mountains, dry riverbeds and wide valleys in north-western Namibia. It is known for desert-adapted wildlife, rock art and some of the country's most dramatic scenery. The name is also central to Tsawises: our name comes from a communal farm in Damaraland.

When to visit

The dry season (roughly May to October) is best for wildlife, which concentrates along riverbeds. Summer is very hot but can bring green landscapes after rain. Nights are cool in winter.

How to get there

Damaraland is roughly a full day's drive from Windhoek, usually via Otjiwarongo or Outjo to Khorixas, then on gravel to the lodges. Roads between sights are mostly gravel, so allow extra time and check tyres.
