4X4 OR 2WD

Do I need a 4x4 in Namibia?

Short answer: not for every trip, but a 4x4 or high-clearance vehicle makes many Namibia routes safer and more comfortable.

QUICK ANSWER

Short answer: not for every trip, but a 4x4 or high-clearance vehicle makes many Namibia routes safer and more comfortable. Main highways are paved and many popular routes are well-graded gravel, but sand, rocky tracks and remote areas need a more capable vehicle. Rental terms may also restrict where you can take a 2WD.

BY ROUTE

What each route usually needs

General guidance only; confirm your exact route with your rental company.

Paved highways and main towns

Windhoek to Swakopmund, Windhoek to Etosha and the B1 are paved. A 2WD car can manage these, though a higher vehicle is more comfortable on long days.

Etosha National Park

Park roads are gravel but generally suit a normal car. An SUV or 4x4 offers a higher view for wildlife.

Sossusvlei and the Namib

The road to Sesriem is paved or good gravel. The final sand section to Deadvlei needs a suitable 4x4 or the park shuttle.

Damaraland and the north-west

Gravel and rocky roads are common. A high-clearance 4x4 is the sensible choice, particularly after rain.

Skeleton Coast and Kaokoland

Remote tracks, sand and long distances without services. A capable 4x4, extra fuel, water and recovery equipment are strongly recommended.

Sandwich Harbour

Tidal beach and dune driving. Most visitors use an experienced guide.

HOW TO DECIDE

Four questions to ask yourself

If you answer yes to any of these, lean towards a 4x4.

01

Will you drive on gravel for most of the trip?

A higher vehicle with more suspension travel handles corrugations and loose surfaces better.

02

Are you visiting remote areas?

If help is hours away, reliability, spare tyres and capability matter more than cost.

03

Do you travel in or after the rainy season?

Rain can quickly make gravel roads and river crossings hazardous.

04

Are you carrying a lot of luggage or camping gear?

A bakkie with a load area or an SUV with extra space is more practical than a small car.
