Fish River Canyon is one of the largest canyons in the world, a vast gorge about 160 km long and up to 27 km wide, carved into southern Namibia's plateau. The main viewpoints at Hobas are a spectacular stop on a southern route, and the hot springs at Ai-Ais are nearby.
When to visit
The cooler months (roughly May to September) are the most comfortable. Summer can be extremely hot. The multi-day Fish River Canyon hiking trail is generally open only in the cooler months and requires advance booking, fitness and a medical certificate.
How to get there
The canyon is roughly 700 km from Windhoek, about 8 hours of driving, so many travellers break the trip at Keetmanshoop or Mariental. The main viewpoints are accessible by normal vehicle, on mostly gravel roads.
