DESTINATION
Wild north-western landscapes demanding thoughtful preparation.
WHY GO
Kaokoland, in the far north-west of Namibia, is one of the continent's last great wilderness areas. Rugged mountains, desert valleys and the Kunene River shape a landscape that is home to the Himba and other communities. It is remote, demanding country that rewards preparation.
The dry months (roughly May to October) are the safest and most practical for travel, with firmer tracks and cooler weather. The wet season can make routes difficult or impassable in places.
Opuwo, the main town, is roughly 800 km from Windhoek, so it is a two-day journey by road. Beyond Opuwo, most routes need a high-clearance 4x4, fuel and water planning and, for many travellers, a guide. This is a higher-preparation route.

Cultural visits should be host-led, respectful and arranged in advance.
Tracks through mountains and dry riverbeds for experienced, well-prepared drivers.
Remote camps and community-run campsites offer a very different stay from the main tourist routes.
Travel with a suitable 4x4, spare tyres, extra fuel and water, and a satellite or other communication option. Ask permission before photographing people and follow local guidance. Distances and driving times are approximate and depend on route, season and road conditions. Tsawises confirms the route, vehicle and timings in your written proposal.
