DESTINATION
Immense horizons, dark skies and refined desert stillness.
WHY GO
NamibRand Nature Reserve is a large private reserve on the edge of the Namib Desert, known for wide gravel plains, red dune ridges, mountain backdrops and some of the darkest night skies in southern Africa. It is a destination for space and silence rather than a long list of sights.
Dry-season months (roughly May to September) are the most comfortable and offer the clearest skies. Summer is hot but can bring dramatic skies after rain. Desert wildlife such as oryx, springbok and ostrich is visible year round.
NamibRand lies south of Sossusvlei and is usually combined with it on a longer southern route. Allow a full day's driving from Windhoek, and expect gravel roads for the last stretch. Access to the reserve is arranged through the lodges and camps inside it.

Open gravel plains, fairy-circle grasslands and distant mountains give a very different feel to the big dunes.
Quiet, low-impact activities suit the reserve's conservation focus.
Combine the two for both iconic scenery and a quiet, remote stay.
Plan the route and fuel carefully; services are limited. Confirm how your lodge handles access, and avoid driving at night. Distances and driving times are approximate and depend on route, season and road conditions. Tsawises confirms the route, vehicle and timings in your written proposal.
