Dune-to-ocean views
Steep dunes meet the surf in a landscape unlike anywhere else on the coast.

DESTINATION
Where towering dunes meet the Atlantic coast.
WHY GO
Sandwich Harbour is a coastal wetland and lagoon where towering dunes drop straight into the Atlantic. It is one of Namibia's most dramatic landscapes, but conditions depend on tides and soft sand, so most visitors go with an experienced guide.
Visits run year round, with the timing of each trip set by the tide and weather. Calm mornings are usually the best for photography and for birdwatching on the lagoon.
The area lies roughly 50 km south of Walvis Bay inside the Namib-Naukluft National Park. The route follows the beach and dunes and needs a suitable 4x4 and local knowledge, which is why guided tours from Walvis Bay are the usual way to go.
Steep dunes meet the surf in a landscape unlike anywhere else on the coast.
The wetland attracts large numbers of flamingos, pelicans and migratory waders.
Experienced guides read the tides and sand so you do not have to.
Many tours include a stop on the dunes with views over the lagoon.
Do not attempt this route independently unless you are experienced with tidal beach and dune driving. Take sun protection and a windproof layer. Distances and driving times are approximate and depend on route, season and road conditions. Tsawises confirms the route, vehicle and timings in your written proposal.
It is not recommended without experience. The route depends on tides and soft sand, and most visitors join a guided 4x4 trip from Walvis Bay.
