DESTINATION

Sossusvlei

Monumental dunes, sculptural clay pans and desert light.

WHY GO

Sossusvlei: what to know before you go.

Sossusvlei is the best-known part of the Namib-Naukluft National Park: huge red dunes, white clay pans and the dead camelthorn trees of Deadvlei. Light, not distance, is what makes a visit — dawn and late afternoon turn the dunes deep orange and red.

When to visit

The cooler, drier months (roughly May to September) are the most comfortable for climbing dunes and walking to Deadvlei. Summer midday temperatures can be extreme, so visits are best planned around sunrise. Winter nights are cold even though days are warm.

How to get there

Sossusvlei is roughly 5 to 6 hours by road from Windhoek, via the Sesriem gate. The road is paved to Sossusvlei itself, while the final stretch of deep sand is usually covered by a 4x4 or the park shuttle. Staying near the Sesriem gate lets you enter at sunrise.

Practical tips

Carry plenty of water, wear sun protection and sturdy shoes, and check gate times for the season. Do not drive the sand section unless your vehicle and experience suit it. Distances and driving times are approximate and depend on route, season and road conditions. Tsawises confirms the route, vehicle and timings in your written proposal.
