Swakopmund: what to know before you go.

Swakopmund is Namibia's main coastal resort, a small town of German colonial architecture set between the cold Atlantic and the dunes of the Namib Desert. It is the adventure and activity centre of the coast and a comfortable base after days of desert driving.

When to visit

The coast is cool and often foggy in the morning all year, even when the interior is hot, so it works as a break from summer heat. The drier, clearer months (roughly May to October) are best for most activities. Pack layers whatever the season.

How to get there

Swakopmund is roughly 4 to 4.5 hours by road from Windhoek on the paved B2 highway. It is also reached from Sossusvlei via Solitaire and the Kuiseb Canyon, a longer scenic drive mostly on gravel.
