Lagoon birdlife
Flamingos and other wading birds gather in large numbers on the lagoon.

DESTINATION
Lagoon life and access to marine and dune experiences.
WHY GO
Walvis Bay is Namibia's main port and one of the best places on the coast for wildlife. The lagoon is a major wetland for flamingos and other birds, and boat trips go out to seals, dolphins and the Pelican Point peninsula.
Birds and marine life can be seen year round. Boat trips run most days when the weather allows, and mornings are often calm. As elsewhere on the coast, expect cool mornings and fog.
Walvis Bay is about 30 km south of Swakopmund, so most travellers visit as a day trip. It is roughly 4.5 hours from Windhoek by road, and has its own airport.
Flamingos and other wading birds gather in large numbers on the lagoon.
Cruises often include Cape fur seals, dolphins and sometimes whales, depending on season.
Guided 4x4 trips head south along the coast to the point where dunes meet the sea.
Seal kayaking trips and fresh local seafood complete a coast day.
Choose licensed boat and 4x4 operators and ask what the trip includes. Tides and wind determine which excursions run. Distances and driving times are approximate and depend on route, season and road conditions. Tsawises confirms the route, vehicle and timings in your written proposal.
Yes, mainly for its wildlife: flamingos, seals, dolphins and the nearby Sandwich Harbour.
